Mental Health Volunteer

At Advocacy Focus and we are commencing a contract in the Trafford area from 1st April in regards to delivering advocacy across Trafford – our new office will be located on Chester Road. This will create several volunteering opportunities for the residents of Trafford. Roles will include running drop-ins on mental health wards, supporting people to make complaints against the NHS and Social Care, accompanying paid Advocates on home visits as a second person and  supporting us to run community/self-help groups.


Responsible to: Volunteer Manager

Main Purpose: To support individuals whose primary needs relate to mental health, enabling them to express their views and providing them with information relating to their rights under the Mental Health Act

Our Mission: To provide high quality advocacy for all.


Main Tasks


To facilitate drop-ins on mental health wards to inform patients of advocacy services and their rights under the Mental Health Act.

To take service referrals or signpost to other services where needs fall outside of our remit.

To support patients to address issues with ward staff and provide ad hoc support during triage, ward rounds and/or low level meetings.

To maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation and work within the appropriate legislation (full training is provided).

To support the service to raise funds to further develop the charity.

To provide reception facilities for the organisation including answering the phone, dealing with enquiries, collecting service feedback and ensuring messages/referrals are dealt with appropriately.

To complete relevant paperwork and monitoring in order to capture the work completed within this volunteer role, inclusive of volunteer timesheet and expenses sheets.

To input information on the Advocacy Focus’ database as and when required.

To attend regular supervisions with the Volunteer Manager.

To attend necessary internal and external training sourced and provided by Advocacy Focus.

To work within Advocacy Focus’ volunteer policies and procedures including Data Protection and Safeguarding.


Personal Qualities Required



  • A commitment of 3-4  hours per week for a minimum period of 6 months
  • Reliable and organised
  • Sound interpersonal, administration and IT skills
  • The ability listen to others and maintain confidentiality
  • A smart appearance.
  • A non-judgemental individual who will respect individual’s cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds



  • A basic knowledge of advocacy and what this entails
  • An understanding of mental health and the challenges faced by people who access our service
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act (however full training will be provided)
  • Experience of using IT systems
