At Advocacy Focus and we are commencing a contract in the Trafford area from 1st April in regards to delivering advocacy across Trafford – our new office will be located on Chester Road. This will create several volunteering opportunities for the residents of Trafford. Roles will include running drop-ins on mental health wards, supporting people to make complaints against the NHS and Social Care, accompanying paid Advocates on home visits as a second person and supporting us to run community/self-help groups.
Community Advocacy Volunteer role
Responsible to: Volunteer Manager
Main Purpose: To support and enable individuals to express their views and provide them with advocacy support around Health and Social Care issues. To provide advocacy outreach to further promote our service.
Our Mission: To provide high quality advocacy for all.
To accompany Advocates on home visits as a second person.
To support our ‘Pop-Up’ advocacy outreach provision and raise awareness of our service in the community.
To co-facilitate advocacy groups and awareness sessions in the community.
To support service users to make Health and Social Care complaints should they so wish.
To support service users to keep a record of discussions, write letters, make telephone calls and gain relevant information to enable them to make informed choices.
To support the service to raise funds to further develop the charity.
To provide reception facilities for the organisation including answering the phone, collecting service feedback, dealing with enquiries and ensuring messages/referrals are dealt with appropriately.
To retain records in line with Advocacy Focus’s procedures for monitoring and complete relevant volunteer time sheets and expenses.
To attend quarterly supervisions and volunteer meetings with the Volunteer Manager.
To attend necessary internal and external training sourced and provided by Advocacy Focus.
To work within Advocacy Focus’ volunteer policies and procedures, including Data Protection and Safeguarding.
Personal Qualities Required
- A commitment of 3-4 hours per week for a minimum period of 6 months
- Reliable and organised
- An outgoing and enthusiastic personality
- Sound interpersonal skills
- The ability listen to others and maintain confidentiality
- A smart appearance
- A non-judgemental individual who will respect individual’s cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds
- A basic knowledge of advocacy and what this entails
- Experience of IT systems
